Introducing Dr. Amy George: New Program Director of the ASTP Breast Imaging Fellowship
The Department of Radiology is pleased to welcome Dr. Amy George as the new Program Director of the Advanced Specialty Training Program (ASTP) Breast Imaging Fellowship, effective July 1, 2025.
Driven by her commitment to learning and community, Dr. George believes that breast imaging is the perfect integration of these values. She completed her fellowship in Women's Imaging at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston and her radiology residency at the University of California, San Diego, which included a visiting elective at Christchurch Hospital in New Zealand. After completing her fellowship, she joined RadPartners private practice in Columbus, Ohio, where she served as the medical director at the River Valley campus.
Dr. George expressed her excitement about returning to academia and now considers Northwestern University her home as she embarks on her new journey as the Program Director for the ASTP Breast Imaging Fellowship. In her new role, she looks forward to helping transform residents into fully qualified attendings, equipping them with the skills needed to become leaders. She has collaborated on several research and educational exhibits with trainees, addressing topics such as pregnancy-associated breast cancer, non-calcified ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), multifocal/multicentric localizations, and 3D printing. Dr. George finds great fulfillment in recognizing the value of each fellow's contributions to the broader goals of radiology and medicine, earning a teaching award for her section in 2024.
With her new position, Dr. George envisions leading the next generation of breast imagers by launching initiatives such as a "research shark tank" for fellows and co-hosting a new podcast series titled "Radiology Trailblazers," one of the American Journal of Roentgenology Podcasts. This monthly podcast, starting in July, features conversations with pioneering radiologists who innovate and transform daily practices. Together with her co-host, Dr. Lindsey Negrete from Stanford University, they will cover a wide range of topics, including education, venture capitalism, sustainability, NASA, and artificial intelligence. The trailer is here, and you can tune into Dr. George’s podcast on the AJR website, as well as on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.
In addition to preparing fellows for their future careers in breast imaging, Dr. George founded the Pink Collective: An Expression of Art. The first exhibition, installed in October 2024, recognizes patients’ courage and resilience throughout their breast cancer journeys. Inspired by joining a vibrant quilting community she observed in Ohio, where women shared hope and support at a breast cancer center, Dr. George established the Pink Collective. The Pink Collective fosters community connections and empowers individuals through art and personal expression. If you are interested in participating in the Pink Collective, please access the link to the form below for more information. As Dr. George says, "all artists are welcome!"
On a personal note, Dr. George is an avid traveler and violinist, pursuits that contribute to her balanced lifestyle. Her husband, Matt, is a vascular surgeon, and they have a one-year-old daughter, Amelia. They recently traveled to Amsterdam and are looking forward to visiting Tokyo in September. To maintain balance in her life, Dr. George intentionally takes time each day to step outside and practice gratitude, and she encourages everyone to do the same.
From leading future radiologists as the newly appointed Program Director to fostering community and innovation through the Pink Collective and Radiology Trailblazers, we are excited for Dr. George in her new role and all her contributions to advancing Northwestern’s Breast Imaging program.
