Funding Opportunities

Browse a list of popular funding opportunities to secure financial research support from the university and beyond.

 Radiology Pilot Research Grant

The Radiology Pilot Research Grant Program is designed to fund research in areas identified by the Department of Radiology as important to the advancement of radiology and patient care. These grants address a specific hypothesis and are designed to generate preliminary data that could be used to justify or strengthen subsequent comprehensive applications to national, peer-reviewed funding agencies. The objective of these proposals is to support the initial research efforts of faculty within the department so they can become funded investigators on subsequent grants.

Grant funding of up to $5,000 will be made for pilot grant–type projects that test a new idea or help support a new area or direction of research in diagnostic and interventional radiology.

Grants are available to full-time faculty in the department. Junior faculty (within five years of appointment), with identification of a mentor, are particularly encouraged to apply.

Radiology UIM Research Summer Fellowship Program

The Northwestern Radiology UIM Student Research Summer Fellowship.  The Northwestern Radiology 6-10-week summer fellowship program gives students underrepresented in medicine (UIM) the opportunity to gain insight into the specialty of Radiology while developing research skills required to perform medical imaging research. Recipients will work closely with mentors in the department of radiology to define study objectives, test hypotheses, and analyze data. They will also have the opportunity to learn about the Radiology residency program. Ultimately, this experience gives UIM medical students a chance to consider academic radiology as a future career option.

 American Heart Association

The Midwestern affiliate of the American Heart Association (AHA) offers funding for an undergraduate student research program, predoctoral fellowship, postdoctoral fellowship and a clinical research program scientist development grant. On the national level, AHA also offers scientist development grants and fellow-to-faculty transition awards for residents looking for research funding. Visit the AHA site for deadlines and additional details.

 National Institutes of Health

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) accept funding applications from scientists at any level of their careers. Visit their Grant Programs page for more information. Check the funding opportunity announcement for due date information. If it says "standard dates apply," refer to Standard Due Dates for Competing Applications.

Opportunities include:

  • Research Grants (R series): The R25 and K99-R00 are recommended for residents
  • Career Development Grants (K series)
  • Research Training and Fellowships (T & F series)
  • Program Project/Center Grants (P series)

Northwestern University Clinical & Translational Sciences Institute (NUCATS)
