Thank you for your interest in the 2011-2012 Fellowship in Vascular and Interventional Radiology at the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University and Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
The McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University, Department of Radiology, Section of Vascular and Interventional Radiology offers a one-year, Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-approved program for eight individuals each year. The program provides exposure to the full range of vascular and interventional radiology in its entirety. Our section performs all interventional procedures at our new hospital , including CT and ultrasound-guided biopsies and drainages. Procedural volume in our section last year was 9,000+ encounters and 16,000+ procedures. We are, therefore, in a position to provide optimal interventional services for our patients and referring physicians.
Trainees will gain experience on a wide variety of procedures. Northwestern’s equipment includes seven dedicated angiographic suites consisting of two Siemens Multistar, an Angiostar Plus, and two shared Neurostars. A sixth angiography suite consists of a new generation Siemens Flat Pannel unit mated to a new Siemens MRI, providing state-of-the-art MR/fluoroscopy-guided procedures. We also have a dedicated interventional ultrasound suite with three Acuson Sequoias and one Siemens Antares ultrasound unit, as well as two Sonosite ultrasounds, and two Terason ultrasounds that are solely for our use. The Body Imaging Section is currently equipped with nine GE Light Speed helical CT scanners, including high-speed 16 and 64 slice GE machines, eleven 1.5T MR units, and a dedicated 3.0T research magnet. All studies are available for review via a hospital-wide PACS. More than two hundred diagnostic CT, MR, and US exams are performed daily as are numerous CTA and MRA studies, including cardiac and coronary imaging. Twelve to 18 image-guided biopsies and drainages are performed by our section daily. A hospital-based nursing service that places bedside PICC lines has recently expanded to include weekend service. A group of 3 IR-based physician assistants performs most of the IR minor procedures, such as outpatient PICC’s, paracentesis, and thoracentesis. All inpatient, outpatient, and clinic data are stored in a electronic medical record format.
Fellows also rotate at the nearby Children’s Memorial Hospital, which has two full-time and two part-time pediatric interventionalists who perform 2,000+ procedures on an annual basis. Both facilities are staffed by Northwestern University faculty members. In addition, while at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, our fellows participate in a six-week clinical rotation during which time is spent in the various outpatient IR clinics, including oncology, UFE, vascular, and vein clinics. During this time, fellows also rotate with the vascular surgical service and participate in aortic stent grafting, carotid stenting, and vascular lab study analysis. Finally, Fellows will spend a six week rotation at the affiliated Veterans Administration Hospital. At this site the IR Suite contains a brand new Siemens ARTIS unit and the service performs about 1500 Procedures per year.
The Northwestern IR section is actively and continuously involved in presentations and exhibits at national and international radiology meetings. Numerous projects are ongoing within the section and department and fellows are encouraged to participate in this research. Current areas of interest include regional cancer therapy, including radio frequency ablation , cryoablation, microwave ablation and therasphere/sirsphere embolization, uterine fibroid embolization, magnetic resonance angiography, laser vein ablation, and interventional MRI/MRA. We are involved in numerous clinical trials, including hepatic radioembolization, percutaneous intratumoral chemoinfusion, hepatic lung and osseous tumor radio frequency ablation, and percutaneous hepatic arterial infusion port placement. Fellows also play an important central role in the daily management of patients. Daily morning rounds are made on the interventional radiology inpatient and consult services and the fellows are responsible for their day-to-day care.
